Summertime – By George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, and Dubose Heyward
Copyright George Gershwin Music, Ira Gershwin Music, Du Bose, and Dorothy Heyward Memorial Fund Publishing, and Nokawi Music.

As I was choosing songs from Ted’s repertoire I also looked for songs that I just really loved playing. Summertime is one of those songs that seems to generate endless possibilities of interpretation. It is unusual because I almost pulled this song from the CD at the last minute.I woke up in the middle of the night wondering in all seriousness if the song perpetuated racial stereotypes. I spent a lot of time thinking about it and checking in with my community. I considered converting to an instrumental. re-writing the lyrics, but in the end run and after much discussion I decided the song was an uplifted prayer from a mother to a child during difficult times. I also feel that the questions about this song can open up conversations about what we assume and don't assume.

Linda Styles joins me here with a voice like an angel and sings a beautiful and powerful version of the song. Kip Kuepper swings the groove on Acoustic Bass.
